Amanda Brugel

Pointe Claire in Montreal's West Island is a tiny sleepy town. The people who aren't familiar with this term tend to think there is a separate island to the west of Montreal but in fact this part of West Island is home to every aspect of Lachine west to the City of Lachine west. Amanda Brugel is said to have been born on the West Island. But this isn't the truth. Brugel grew in Courtice located just outside of Oshawa. When she was a child, she wanted to be professional performer, however an unexpected increase in her height made it difficult. In an article in The Toronto Star she admitted In heels I'm 6 feet 1 inch. When I surpassed my male counterpart then I slowed down. Former dancers often turn to acting, and in the instance of Brugel, it was a suggestion from her high school drama teacher. The teacher recommended that she try out for a school play. After trying out her options, she was eventually the leading lady in Anne of Green Gables. This led to her being awarded an Fine Arts Talent Scholarship from York University. In 2000 she graduated with a BA in Fine Arts at York University. In the 20+ years since, Brugel has landed roles on more than 60 productions across both small and large screens. She attracted the most attention when she landed the role as Rita in the award-winning show The Handmaid's Tale (pictured below). Brugel appeared only on rare occasions in the first season of the series The Handmaid's tale. She was the sole Canadian participant.
